Indexing / Robots and sitemap QA

How to check noindex, robots.txt, and sitemap conflicts

Find the common launch mistake where one signal asks Google to index a URL while another tells it to stay away.

Check noindex conflicts

Start with index directives

Check meta robots and X-Robots-Tag headers first. If either says noindex, the page should not be submitted as an indexable URL in your sitemap.

Then inspect robots.txt

Robots.txt controls crawling, not indexing. Do not block a page in robots.txt if Google needs to crawl it to see a noindex tag or canonical URL.

Make sitemap and canonical agree

Only submit canonical, indexable URLs. Remove redirected, duplicate, parameter-heavy, staged, or noindex URLs from the sitemap before launch.
